Travis’s story
Travis, a mentally alert and physically fit 28 year old man, was admitted with the diagnosis of acute upper respiratory disease. During the course of his recovery Travis experienced a seizure which was treated.
Later when it was time to prepare Travis for discharge, Joanna, his primary nurse, noticed that Travis was having mood swings. When questioned, Travis just chuckled and said that it was no problem. Joanna and his physician were not convinced that he was entirely well and decided to keep Travis hospitalised for a few more days. Travis loudly objected to this and asserted that he was "just fine".
The physician suspected that Travis might be taking non-prescribed drugs which were causing his mood swings and his seizure. Travis denied the charge. Joanna, however, thought that the physician's suspicion might be correct. In fact, she had noticed that Travis had a small bag that he kept in his suitcase in the wardrobe. The previous day, he had quickly closed his suitcase and put it in the wardrobe when she walked into the room. When she asked if he needed anything, he was quite defensive and quickly turned on the television.
After relating this episode to the physician, Joanna was asked to "do a little detective work" and search for non-prescribed drugs when Travis was out of the room.
