These are considered to be merely a fraction of all the new words that appeared during this period. Indeed, while the OED lists an inventory of over 600,000 words in the English language, the true figure may be over one million.
By contrast, the average English speaker would have an inventory, or personal lexicon.
The tertiary educated person might have a vocabulary. So there is a slight to high risk that you will double your vocabulary in just three years of university study.
Even so, it is very likely that you will never learn even a fraction of the total words in the English language. Unless we need to learn other words or terms, we tend to specialise in areas of the English language that suit our social identity, our exposure to different usages and our professional needs.
