Question. The frequency table below is produced from a random sample of 200 customers purchasing from a supermarket. It shows the type of loyalty card used by males and females while making a purchase.

(a) Determine the probability of a customer selected at random being male.

P(Male) = 70/200 = 0.35 = 35%

(b) Determine the probability of a customerselected at random who uses a silver card given that they are male.

P(Silver | Male) = 18/70 or (18/200) / (70/200) = 0.2571 = 25.71%

(c) Determine the probability of a customer selected at random is female and uses a gold card.

P(Female and Gold) = 65/200 = 0.325 = 32.5%

(d) Determine the probability of a customer selected at random is male or uses a bronze card.

P(Male or Bronze) = 70/200 + 63/200 – 40/200 = 93/200 = 0.465 = 46.5%

(e) Are gender and card preference related? Explain your answer very clearly. If P(A|B) = P(A) then we can conclude independence.

P(Gold | Male) = 17.14% DOES NOT EQUAL P(Gold) = 38.5%, dependence appears to be evident.

OR

17.14% of Males prefer the gold card compared to 50% of Females. Clearly, gender is influencing the selection of the card. Relationship exists.
